1918-1938 * Dr. Sidney Schwab headed the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry (a “subdepartment” of the Department of Medicine).
1938-1942 * Dr. Rioch headed the newly created Department of Neuropsychiatry. Dr. Whitehorn was appointed Professor of Psychiatry and had a leading role in teaching psychiatry.
1942-1963 * Dr. Edwin Gildea headed the Department for 21 years. In 1955, the Department was renamed the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology.
1963-1975 * Dr. Eli Robins headed the Department of Psychiatry, which became an independent department in 1963.
1975-1989 * Dr. Samuel Guze headed the Department of Psychiatry.
1989-1993 * Dr. C. Robert Cloninger headed the Department of Psychiatry.
