Inpatient Adult Psychiatry
After foundational week the fellow begins their formal hands-on clinical training on one of our adult inpatient units at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. On this rotation the fellow is paired with one of our inpatient psychiatry attendings. Just like how we approach the training of our physicians, we believe it is important to develop confident clinical decision makers. Thus, there is not a resident trainee on the same clinical team as the APP fellow. These physician trainees are on other teams working one on one with their own attendings taking care of patients.
From day one we want our APP fellows to be seen as the key person driving the care of the patient and leading the treatment team. While the faculty also sees the patients on a daily basis, their main focus is to support the APP fellow by providing important feedback about the trainee’s clinical skills, knowledge, and treatment decisions.
Inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
The second month of training is spent on the CAP inpatient unit at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. The approach is similar to that of the inpatient adult month but geared to the treatment of those younger that 18 years of age.
Outpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
The next 5 months are spent in our CAP outpatient clinics working alongside our CAP faculty. During this time the trainee is assigned to several different clinics where they work side by side with the faculty in those clinics to provide care to patients.
Outpatient Adult Psychiatry
For the final 5 months the trainee returns to adult psychiatry to receive enhanced training in outpatient adult psychiatry. Similar to the outpatient CAP clinic, the fellow is assigned to work in several different clinics that are supported by our outstanding faculty.
