We strive to promote an environment of diversity, equity and inclusivity (DEI) among our faculty, trainees and staff through education, training, mentorship and professional development initiatives.

Psychiatry residents participate in DEI didactics

This includes:

  • Facilitating participation in university wide and departmental level DEI initiatives
    • Starting in 2022 and in partnership with the WUSM Office of DEI, our Department of Psychiatry offers DEI Trainings for all staff, faculty and trainees on an annual basis during Grand Rounds and Research Rounds
      • Since the beginning of our partnership, we have had hundreds of our psychiatry employees attend DEI Trainings 1.0 – 4.0. The Department is consistently recognized by leaders across WUSM for our commitment to DEI.  This is because of the actions taken by our psychiatry employees.
    • If you are an employee of the Department of Psychiatry and you would like to schedule your trainings, please contact us here.
  • Specialized DEI training for Residents & Fellows
    • In 2022, we launched resident and fellow participation in the USR Curriculum in partnership with the WUSM Office of DEI. We take pride in continuing to implement this curriculum across our trainee programs.
    • Our trainees have continued to have DEI centered and Understanding Systemic Racism sessions throughout the duration of their program.
  • Department of Psychiatry DEI leadership is actively participating in the WUSM task force that will establish best practices for recruitment of Under Represented in Medicine (URiM) trainees.
  • DEI Specialized Rotation in Psychiatry
    • For residents and fellows who are particularly interested in DEI, we have a DEI-specialized rotation. This rotation provides the opportunity for a trainee to engage in various DEI initiatives occurring within psychiatry and across our medical school campus. One can design and implement a specialized DEI focus with the support of various DEI leaders. If this is of interest to you, please contact us here.
  • Leadership training:
    • The Department of Psychiatry provides financial support for URiM faculty who have interest in attending professional development activities including the AAMC Mid-Career Minority Faculty Leadership Seminar.
    • If this is of interest to you, please contact us here.
  • Department of Psychiatry prioritizes guest speakers who expand awareness and sensitivity about DEI including transgender behavioral health, and implicit bias in health care.
    • If you would like to recommend a guest speaker, please contact us here.

Department-Wide Understanding Systemic Racism Training

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion brought Understanding Systemic Racism to our whole department across two weeks in January 2024. All four sessions entitled “Why are we starting with race,” “Race as a social construct,” “How racism harms” and “Exploring personal identities,” respectively. Each session had 100+ of our department community in attendance: faculty, staff, and trainees alike. We are currently in the planning stages of what our next steps for Understanding Systemic Racism will be for our department. Stay tuned for updates.
