Dr. Samuel Guze obtained his MD from Washington University in 1945. He continued his training in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital and Washington University, except for a year of medicine training in Connecticut. In 1950, the Commonwealth Fund provided a grant to fund a psychosomatic medicine fellow to work with Dr. George Saslow. Dr. Guze was offered this fellowship and continued his training in psychiatry. He became an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine from 1953 to 1955. In 1955, Dr. Guze also became an assistant professor of psychiatry. After Dr. Saslow left the Department in 1955, Dr. Guze played a key role in areas that were of interest to both psychiatry and medicine. He became an associate professor of psychiatry in 1959 and a full professor in 1964. In addition to clinical and research skills, Dr. Guze had administrative talents. He became the Assistant to the Dean from 1965 to 1971. In 1971, he was appointed the Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs of the Medical School. In 1975, he also became Head of the Department of Psychiatry. He maintained both positions until 1989. Dr. Guze served as Department Head again from 1993 until 1997. Dr. Guze was the first recipient of the Spencer T. Olin Professorship in Psychiatry. Dr. Guze passed away in July 2000.
